Use the Room Transfer Form when requesting animals be moved from one holding room on campus to another or between campuses. Tufts CMS reviews the health history of the rooms to assess whether any pathogen testing is necessary prior to the moves and to track room movements in case a pathogen is later reported. Please provide at least one day notice and wait for approval if you plan to transfer the animals yourself. Provide 5 days notice if Tufts CMS will be transferring the animals for you. For questions, contact TuftsCMS-relocation@tufts.edu
If an IACUC protocol transfer is also required (e.g. a change in PI), also complete the IACUC protocol transfer form and wait for a separate response from IACUC prior to moving the animals.

Moving animals within Tufts requires adherence to specific transport protocols to maintain biosecurity and animal welfare. Animals must be transported in clean cages covered with opaque drapes, in line with IACUC’s Intra-Institutional Transport Policy. Disposable coverings and other transport supplies are provided by CMS for your convenience. During transit, ensure proper cage setup to prevent water spillage and maintain separation by sex to avoid unintended pregnancies. For building-specific elevator and cleaning guidelines, contact the CMS Husbandry Office to access necessary supplies and ensure safe, compliant transport within Tufts facilities. Check out IACUC Policy on Intra-Institutional Transport of Rodents from the Animal Facility for more information.
