Special Husbandry Requests

Requests for the following CMS services should be directed to the Husbandry Office:

  1. Additional cage changes (additional fees may apply)
  2. Special diets*
  3. Sterile supplies
  4. Medicated water

In addition, cotton-nesting material for breeding mice and crinkle nests with tubes for breeding rats are available to all investigators.

This is not a complete list of services available; feel free to discuss specific requirements with the Husbandry Office or CMS Director. Advance notice of all special requirements is necessary to assure a timely and accurate response. Therefore, requests must be submitted at least 5 business days before the date needed.  *Investigators using special food or water must contact the Husbandry Office Staff prior to beginning the project. When administering SPECIAL DIET or SPECIAL WATER the use of "Special Husbandry" cards provided by CMS is required.  Tags are available in each animal room or can be requested from the CMS Husbandry Office Staff or the Veterinary Service technicians. The tag must be labeled with the identification of the diet/water, and it must indicate if the investigator is responsible for replenishing, i.e., "Provided by PI". Investigators are expected to leave an adequate amount of the diet or medicated water with the CMS husbandry staff to use in case of emergency, such as a bottle leaking or food becoming contaminated.  Spare provisions should be in a tightly sealed container, labeled with relevant information, i.e., investigator, protocol #, expiration date if applicable, etc., and given to the Husbandry Office staff at the start of the experiment. If this is not possible, you must provide a method of contact to allow for 24-hour emergency communication.  To make arrangements, please use the Husbandry Supply Request Form
