Tufts CMS office provides administrative support services under the leadership of the Tufts CMS Senior Director. The staff works with investigators, laboratory staff and administrators to assure facilitation of services such as purchasing of animals and supplies.
Ordering animals for use in research is performed EXCLUSIVELY by Tufts CMS. This long-standing policy is an essential component of Tufts CMS’s accredited animal care and use program.
Only animals from approved vendors may be ordered. Approved vendors are authorized, licensed vendors; and use of these vendors provides essential quality control, protects the health of resident animals and staff, and ensures that the animals are acquired legally. Animals from any non-vendor sources that are not on the list of approved vendors, such as animals from other research institutions, must go through the Tufts CMS importation quarantine program instead of direct animal ordering.
To order animals, obtain an Animal Purchase Request Form from this online link, from the Tufts CMS office, from the animal facility, or via interoffice mail. Please do not use copies of previously sent forms, as each form needs to have a unique identification number that is entered into a computer program to track animal orders.
Complete a separate Animal Purchase Request form for each species, strain, gender and age/weight.
Please notify the Tufts CMS Husbandry office in advance of placing the order if you will be using hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, dogs, swine, or other large animals, to be sure that housing space will be available for these species when needed.
The deadlines for receiving and processing Animal Purchase Request forms are:
Thursday 12 Noon for deliveries on the following Tuesday
Monday 12 Noon for delivery on the following Thursday
You will receive notification if the requested arrival date cannot be met, for example, if the vendor does not have enough of the specified age or strain of the animal requested.
